Choe’s HapKiDo: Patience

Choe’s HapKiDo – One of the hardest lesson to learn? Patience. And in this day and age, we are spoiled with instant results. We can download anything at any second, have packages delivered in a short amount of time, and find quick ways to fix our problems. A technologically advanced society makes waiting even more painful.

But as the old saying goes, “Good things come to those who wait.”

Have you ever experienced gratification after seeing your hard work paying off? It took time, persistance, and discipline. There may have been tears and sweat, but it was worth it, right? That diploma, the completion of a project, the end of a hard time—these sitiuations show the positive effects of waiting

At Choe’s HapKiDo, we discuss with our students the importance of patience. For example, patience allows us to stay calm. When we are stressed about waiting for results or trying to perfect a technique, getting worked up doesn’t speed up the process. Being patient also teaches us to be more understanding of the situations we come across. For instance, we may get impatient with traffic, long lines, and peers. But if we’re empathetic towards the people around us, and understand that maybe they’re having a tough time, we become more relaxed because we’re making efforts to understand the situations better. So, patience teaches us to reflect ourselves.

So the next time you’re dealing with impatience, remember to relax and take deep breaths. If it’s to do with someone else, try to have some empathy that maybe they’re learning. You may have been in their shoes before. And if it’s impatience with yourself, calm yourself down and remember that patience pays off.

Because it does!

Black Belt Tests at Karate Monroe

The journey to Black Belt is not an easy one. Similar to achieving a school degree, that diploma represents the years and hard work that was put in to the success. Achieving Black Belt level is similar, that notable belt color signifies the hard training and skills developed over the last good number of years. Degree or belt, no matter the size and number of the obstacles that were thrown, it is possible to reach the end.

At Choe’s HapKiDo Karate Monroe, we help students reach Black Belt success. On the day of the Black Belt test at Karate Monroe, training from all twelve belt levels (white to red) come together. As each belt level breaks down different techniques to learn, the Black Belt test is a huge performance. The perspective student must demonstrate kicks, strikes, self-defense, rolling, flipping, board breaking, sparring, and weaponry from every level.

While the Black Belt test requires a lot of physical endurance, it also demands attention from the mind. Focus, respect, humility, perseverance, and confidence come together. The two halve, the physical and mental, must work together to perform well.

Students become better leaders of themselves and of their communities when they study martial arts at Karate Monroe. Throughout the training, they learn hands-on the importance of working hard, and seeing all of their work paying off. They understand why having and showing respect are important. They learn to pick themselves up and try again. And finally, they learn more about themselves, which adds to their confidence.

As Karate Monroe is part of a huge sport industry, martial arts is also a field where students develop life long relationships with their martial arts family, which is very special. And through all of the training and growth, the students also have fun.

You Have to Want It! – HapKiDo Karate

chkd3

You might not be involved with a martial art, but you can definitely relate to the ideals of goal reaching that’s encouraged in our studios. At Choe’s HapKiDo, self-defense and respect are strong practices. In fact, improvement occurs when an individual finds realizes to have respect for self. Then, when students start making goals, it is because of self-will, confidence, and encouragement.

Goals are great because something in your life caught attention and has pushed for fixing. You are led to the desire of action, and for a dose of responsibility. However, with each goal made, it is always good to think “why.” Did you get inspired? If not inspired, then what?

Sometimes people feel necessary to change due to emotions in response to circumstances. Maybe you feel the need to lose weight because someone commented on your figure. Or maybe the reason to tone up is a response of comparing self. Or perhaps, you plan to work harder because the feeling of incompetence increased. Or even – the need of finding a special somebody due to the pressures of being single can get to anyone’s head…Yeah?

You know, an important element to goal making is the amount of respect you have for yourself. From experience, there’s a difference when making plans because of inspiration versus being bullied into it by yourself. Sure, others can definitely initiate and add weight to your bucket of feelings, but you don’t have to fall into it. When you make goals, it should be because you want them. Otherwise, the journey to reach goals due to pressure can become a miserable one, you might even stop at some point.
