Is 2017 Ready for You?

Can you believe that we are ten days away from a new year?! WHERE has the time gone??

If you had made 2016 New Year’s resolutions, did any of them have to do with a fitness goal? Research shows that every year this type of goal makes it into the top goals that people make each year. And it’s understandable! We are told that we need fitness and healthy dieting in our lives because being healthier is better. But really, people just want to look good! Yes, the health benefits are thought of during the process, but with everyone we see around us, it’s hard to not play the comparison game and then want to make changes.

This year, instead of playing the comparison game, make at least one goal that benefits you and you only! You are the person who lives with yourself, and you are the one who needs to be taken care of. Every decision we make impacts our personal well-being but also the people around us. Adding fitness like martial arts or kickboxing into our daily lives takes care of us. When something in us goes off, it affects everything else about us. Our mood, behavior, tone, and actions are all taken in by who we are with daily.

What are you going to do differently in 2017 than this year with your goal making?

Tip #1: If you are waiting to start a fitness class or the aim to lose weight at the beginning of next year, brainstorm action plans of obstacles that could lead you off path. Tiredness, hunger, limited time, social event s with friends could all lead to temptations to skip a day.

Tip #2: Surround yourself with people who are on the same mission as you. Not everyone of your friends may be eager to start the plan to lose 30 pounds, but there are a lot of people out there who are. Kickboxing and/or martial art classes are a good way to go to be around high energy people while still being able to go at your own pace.

Tip #3: Start when you can. Aside that 2017 is really only ten days away, you don’t have to wait until next year to start. If the goal has been pushed off before, why wait another week or two? Plus,  you are able to have a practice round and see your goal in reality. You may have to adjust the goal, but at least you know.

Take charge of 2017 and be happy about where you are to be able to do that. Life is precious, and we get one shot. But the great thing about life is that we have many opportunities to get back on track.

Growing up, I wanted to be a fighter pilot or a priest, but then martial arts happened. I fell in love with martial arts at a young age by watching Black Belt Theater. In fact, my first martial arts lesson took place in elementary school. My passion for martial arts grew: I started HapKiDo in 1990, began Assistant Instructing in 1991, became a Black Belt in 1994, and then became a Master in 2014. Throughout the 90’s, I competed in a lot of martial arts tournaments. Other martial art areas that I am involved in include being captain of the Demonstration Team, Sparring Team, and Grappling Team.

In addition to continually growing in HapKiDo, I also enjoy hanging out with my beautiful wife and two daughters. As I am heavily involved in practicing martial arts and running multiple Georgia Choe’s HapKiDo & I Love Kickboxing locations, I also get a kick out of watching other lives being changed with martial arts because it has greatly influenced mine.

Choe’s HapKiDo Teams Up With Georgia Mountain Food Bank

—”Let’s End Hunger!”

For its second November straight, a local food drive in Flowery Branch is being hosted by Choe’s HapKiDo. Choe’s HapKiDo Works with Charity to assist the Georgia Mountain Food Bank (GMFB) in Gainesville, the martial arts community is determined to change lives one class at a time.

GMFB is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce hunger throughout North Georgia. According to Choe’s Instructor Rivera, “At Choe’s HapKiDo, one of our precepts is to serve the community. This is one way to serve the community.”

Last year, the amount of non-perishable food collected for GMFB weighed 125 pounds. When asked how Choe’s HapKiDo works with Charity and became a part of the food project, Instructor Rivera reflects, “We had a successful food drive last year, and that inspired us to do another one this year.”

Choe’s HapKiDo aims to drop off this month’s food collected by the end of the month to GMFB.

The next project that Choe’s HapKiDo plans to participate in is Blanket and Socks Drive and is teaming up with Project Live Love.
