Why Should Students Be Tested?

The thrill of martial arts testing hits everyone, but these events also cause nervousness, hesitation, and sometimes the desire to push them off. These low-energy vibes are common with all sorts of testing. With martial arts, the tests test everything about a person. From strength, to flexibility, to respect, to confidence, and to many more aspects, belt tests produce healthy doses of adrenaline and the desire to progress. At Choe’s HapKiDo, our exams are meant to encourage students, not to bring them down. A panel of instructors observes students’ techniques and forms, and we show support to all testers. Even if testing is voluntary, students should be tested because it contributes to their growth as a martial artist.

Why Should Students Be Tested? – They Reel in Many Benefits!

They Give A Sense of Purpose. Belt tests add to the importance of goal making for students. When there are goals in mind, the work practiced has a purpose. They act as guides of wanting to progress, to strive for being the best.

They Show Great Progress. As a result of goals, the tests are evidence for hard work that pays off. The tests also act as time markers. And after a year of HapKiDo Karate, students can reflect on how far they have come since January. These events make for good times to remember!

They Build Confidence. When students overcome something like a martial arts test, especially when hesitant, their confidence increases. They witness their bodies and minds moving exactly how they practiced, and they see how good they are. It is good for instructors to tell students the good work they have done, but it is also important for students to also think that.

They are Inspirations to Keep Going. At belt tests, students are around other levels – higher belts and lower belts. They have the opportunity to watch what to look forward to next and to also refuel their tanks of wanting to reach black belt level.

If we never take the opportunity to rise to the occasion of tests, then how are we to know about the quality of our work. Within each belt test, martial artists grow. They will build their repertoire of finishing what they started, and they will also become less fearful of obstacles because of good qualities that develop: confidence, respect, concentration, humility, and perseverance. And with consistent practice at a place like Choe’s HapKiDo, students aspire to be great leaders.

5 Ways to Improve Your Technique

Practicing martial arts like, Choe’s HapKiDo, is like trying to build a house — a strong foundation is needed. If for instance the pipes are loose after the work is done, construction workers will bash in the nice, polished wall plaster so to tighten the leaky spots. Like other sports, your technique in martial arts contributes to everything. And if time is not taken to perfect technique, then there could be problems further down the road. In fact, sometimes correcting technique requires breaking old habits so to replace them with better ones. Whether it is a certain kick or a self-defense move, there are effective ways to improve technique in martial arts.

5 Ways to Improve Your Technique

Practice Consistently. If reaching good level is desired, then dedication to practice consistently is necessary. Especially when getting to class is difficult on some days, set aside time to practice. The exercise will be good, and staying polished is more possible.

Work on Form at a Slower Pace. As a piano teacher will say, “Perfect practice makes perfect.” If you are struggling with a technique at a fast pace, try practicing at slower pace. This way, one can focus on being able to perform the technique error free. When the muscles are used to the movement, then gradually increase the speed of movement while remaining error free.

Strengthen the Other Muscles that Contribute to the Technique. The technique performed may look good, but the form could improve with some strengthening exercises for the surrounding muscles. For example, an arm might look good, but it is also made up of different components that require different workouts: shoulder, upper arm, forearm, elbow, wrist, hand, and fingers. In martial arts, working on a kick repetitively will strengthen some muscles, but to spend time to develop all the leg muscles as a whole will result in a stronger form.

Brush Off the Mess Ups. It is okay to mess up a technique, just avoid getting caught up in the frustration of it all. Make it a must to practice with continuous good attitude.

Ask for Feedback. Having someone else’s eyes to review a technique performed is beneficial. Especially asking advice from ad experts, they will be able to provide feedback with suggestions on how to improve.

Using Different Learning Styles in Martial Arts

Applying students’ different learning styles in martial arts can make a big difference in their experiences. For example, when adapting to new material, some students might do well just by listening while other students may want to take notes throughout class. By grasping new information with the way they learn best, especially with a martial art like HapKiDo, students will be able to enjoy the program more.

One way that Choe’s HapKiDo likes to expand its students’ experience is to engage in the Korean culture. In addition to practicing its etiquette, students gradually learn the HapKiDo-style kicks in Korean. Therefore, time is spent trying to memorize these terms. Referring back to the different learning styles in martial arts, how someone learns the terms might be different as there are different ways to absorb new material:

  1. Memorizing terms by staring at them on a sheet of paper; pictures and colors will also help. (visual)
  2. Listening to recordings of the terms being spoken. (auditory)
  3. Say the Korean terms while practicing the moves. (tactile)

Whichever style works, arranging the terms in certain ways can help too.

-One way, start with the terms that you use frequently:

-Another way, you can group the terms that look/sound similar:

At least with the 24 basic kicks that will never go away, there are many more ways to have productive study times, and finding ways to make sense of any type of information helps a lot! If it means bothering a co-worker or friend to quiz you or writing them on your hand for non-test times, then try it out!

Belly Breathing Improves Everything

Do you breathe from your chest or your belly?

With a hand on your chest and the other on your stomach — if the hand on your chest rises, then you are using your chest (Sisson).

How you breathe affects your body systems and well-being. By adjusting the breath flow to come directly from your belly versus chest, you utilize the maximum capacity of your lungs, improve cardiovascular and digestive systems, and reduce stress and anxiety. If you can retrain to breathe like the soft rise and fall of a baby’s belly, the “slow, rhythmic diaphragmatic breathing [will produce] relaxed energy” (Rossman). Whereas chest breathing can contribute to chest pains and be the reason for having trouble breathing, belly breathing allows oxygen to fully circulate the body.

Since belly breathing is a better way to breathe, sports and other activities will emphasize to breathe the diaphragmatic way. Developing a natural breathing rhythm supplied from the belly supports yoga, martial arts, kickboxing, running, singing, yelling, sleeping, and many more tasks.

Including exercise throughout the week will strengthen your heart, lungs, and prevent illnesses. Especially when you have jobs that do not require a lot of moving around on foot, you are in danger of the risks from not working out. Rule of thumb, it is good to aim for at 30 minutes a day, and to do more will only benefit you more! To engage in exercise regularly will allow you to improve in belly breathing, which in turn will only benefit you.

Choe’s HapKiDo is a sly way to trick your body into liking exercising and practicing to belly breathe. A large amount of fun exists because all students work towards becoming better in kicks, self-defense, and sparring. Choe’s HapKiDo Martial Arts Teaches Self Defense Classes Georgia

A martial art such as HapKiDo teaches an indefinite number of lessons that intertwine with one another. On top of offering great self defense classes Georgia, one lesson that will always continue is one’s judgment with distancing. This skill is important when it comes to practicing kicks on still targets and moving targets.

While still targets allow students to perfect distancing, moving targets require them to constantly adjust their distances so to obtain the perfect length to apply a move in mind. If the student is too far away, then he/she will miss the target and be not as effective. On the other hand, if the student is too close, he/she may try to adjust awkwardly so to meet the target. The power behind these types of moves is better when the distance between you and the target is met directly with good distance. And the desired distance is different from person to person as legs (and arms!) come in all sorts of lengths. But with practice, everyone can improve.

One of the cool benefits of martial arts classes is that people learn more about their body design, and how to best apply it. Especially when we see many types of people come in, it is fantastic when everyone can learn and enjoy our HapKiDo Karate program!

Problems. Either you can live with or do something about them. At Choe’s HapKiDo, we influence, train, and encourage students to overcome obstacles. Developing this positive mindset is important because life throws curve balls at people all the time. This good habit can turn into an effective skill. Especially when people will not always be available to help, it is beneficial when one can influence self to carry on. In order to do that, the individual must show dedication to wanting improve in any given discipline. Thought of the day – Always do your best, and your best will grow. Especially if you keep practicing, what you can do increases. What was your best last time, might look different today…the quality has most likely changed in the best way possible.

This idea can be seen between belt tests demonstrated at the studios of I Love Martial Arts Georgia. While the first belt to be accomplished requires an individual to show basic techniques, the belt and onwards slowly add advanced skills. More knowledge and moves are taught and your mind and body must learn to function all. As one might perform at a decent level at one belt test, he/she could perform extraordinary at the next one because of more practice. And overtime, the abilities expand and then the level of applying your best is more demanding because you have graciously gotten better.

So, the more you grow, the better you become!

I Love Martial Arts Georgia is strong in disciplining the mind and body. We are also big on serving the community. For us, this year showed that having heart in our efforts can make a positive impact. We witnessed this great outcome when we fundraised for Susan G. Koman’s foundation to show support to breast cancer research and to increase a person’s chance to be able to fight. This experience is an example how everyone can help in different ways — from doctors, researchers, and the community.

Some people might say that part of life is figuring out our gifts so to help others. By simply having a pair of working hands, feet, and an open mind, you are capable of being a helping tool for someone else. Whether it’s doing chores on behalf of your parents or tutoring a peer to do better in a class, anything that can make someone’s day easier is worth it. And the more people are willing to help out, the more beautiful the environment grows!
